Soaring Coffee Prices

The world has just seen the coffee prices hit above the $4 mark and in 2024, Ugandan coffee
exports saw increased prices, with the average export price reaching US$4.64 per kilogram in
December. Some predictions are that this is going to be a historical high even if the prices
retreated
This reality is being felt by actors throughout the coffee supply chain and is forcing many coffee
roasters to think of raising prices. To the roasters, this has been long overdue and bound to call
for some difficult but cautious conversations with their clients.
All coffee businesses need to understand their cost structure, the value they add for the end
consumer, and what the end consumer will be willing to bear.
It is most likely that coffee roasters should be raising their prices “immediately, if not sooner.”
The question will be by how much? The economic answer to this would be, enough to make a
fair profit in which to run your business. We should also remember to reward our loyal
customers with lower prices should the trend reverse.
The Uganda Coffee Roasters Association (UCRA), which is a forum of coffee roasters and allied
industries in Uganda with a principal mandate to promote and provide benefit to their businesses
or other industries, will continually providing the leading roll on how best to handle the soaring
and volatile green coffee prices among other issues.
